Hi, my name is Seán O’Muircheartaigh, I’m 73 and located in Galway, Ireland. I was a patient in Galway Regional Hospital with an undiagnosed illness about five years ago. A computed tomography (CT) scan identified by my doctor showed suspicious darkening at the base of my lung. I was transferred to another hospital where they carried out a full scale investigation and confirmed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
Since my diagnosis, I have been offered to be in a drug trial, but since I have not had noticeable deterioration, I declined. Originally, I was seen every three months, and then was reduced to twice annually. Currently, I am seen annually.
I was invited to join patientMpower six moths ago. The patientMpower app was set up while at a Doctor appointment. I really enjoy the step counter and the spirometer. Both give confidence that my health is progressing well. The readings also encourage me to walk more!

We all take breathing for granted. Patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) can’t take breathing for granted as their lungs are scarred and reducing in capacity. Not enough is known about the disease, and until recently there were very few treatment options. We’re building relationships around the world with world leading treatment centers, patient organizations and researchers to help improve care for IPF patients and knowledge into the disease
